Hule Fm
Type Locality and Naming
The type section is at Hulesi 60 km south of Ningguo City, southern Anhui. The Hule Fm was named by Xu Jie (Hsü S.C.) (1934).
Synonym: (胡乐组)
Lithology and Thickness
The Hule Fm is characterized by black chert intercalated with siliceous shale, with a decreasing siliceous sediment in the upper part. In the type area, the Hule Fm recorded a thickness of 35 m.

Regional extent
It is 23-45 m thick in southern Anhui (Qian Yiguan et al., 1964); 1.5 m in Longyou and 36 m in Jiangshan, western Zhejiang. In Longyou, the top part of the Hule Fm changes into the limestone at the base of the Yanwashan Fm. In Xiushui, Jiangxi, the Hule Fm is composed of 10 m-thick black siliceous shale and yellow calcareous shale (Yu et al., 1976).

Fossils
Following its being named, many researchers studied the Hule Fm. Ge Meiyu (1964) established three graptolite zones, in ascending order, H. teretiusculus zone, N. gracilis zone and D. sinensis zone from the Hule Fm in western Zhejiang. Yu Jianhua et al. (1986) remeasured and described the type section. According to Xu's considerations on the Hule and Ningguo formations, Fang Yiting et al. (1991) drew the lower boundary of the Hule Fm at or slight above the base of P. confertus zone. Fang's et al. (1991) suggestion is followed by the present book. Although the precise horizon of the base of the Hule Fm is variable in various areas, it always within the P. tentaculatus zone.
